Sparta United Academy The Foundation of the Sparta Player Pathway

Academy General Information

As Utah's oldest youth soccer club, Sparta United has spent more than four decades developing players and teams that have represented the club throughout Utah, across the country, and internationally.

There is history behind the Sparta badge, and with it comes a standard of quality we take seriously.

The Sparta United Academy encompasses U6-U12 and serves as the foundation of our player pathway. Our goal is to develop technically capable, intelligent, competitive and resilient players while helping them build a lasting love for the game.

Our Philosophy

We want to win, and we expect Sparta players to compete. At the Academy ages, however, winning cannot come at the expense of development or a player's enjoyment of soccer.

Young players need the freedom to explore the game. They need opportunities to make decisions, solve problems, take risks, be creative and make mistakes. Our role is to provide the coaching, structure and environment that allow that exploration to become meaningful development.

Development at U6 does not look the same as development at U12, nor should it. Players develop at different rates and need different challenges along the way. As they progress through the Academy, expectations increase and technical ability, decision-making, game understanding, competitiveness and accountability become increasingly important.

We believe quality matters more than simply accumulating hours. More training, games and tournaments do not automatically create better players. The quality of the environment, the coaching and the purpose behind the work matter.

One Academy

Our U6-U12 program operates as one connected Academy rather than a collection of independent teams.

The Academy Director oversees the developmental direction of the program and works with coaches throughout U6-U12 to create consistency in how Sparta players are taught and developed. The goal is to provide the appropriate structure and challenge for players at every level while maintaining a common developmental philosophy throughout the Academy.

Coaches and teams will have their own identities, and players will follow different developmental paths. What connects them is a shared standard for the environment we create and the quality of development we expect.

The Player Pathway

At U6-U8, we establish the foundation. Players are encouraged to develop confidence with the ball, be creative, learn to compete and, most importantly, enjoy playing soccer. We want players leaving the field excited to come back.

At U9-U10, the demands gradually increase. Players begin applying their ability under greater pressure and developing a stronger understanding of teammates, opponents, space and decision-making while maintaining the freedom and confidence to play.

At U11-U12, our Pre-MLS NEXT pathway begins. The Boys Pre-MLS NEXT groups are coached directly by the Boys Academy Director, creating a direct connection between the developmental standards established throughout the Academy and what will be expected at the next level.

Beyond U12, Sparta's competitive pathway includes MLS NEXT Academy Division, MLS NEXT Desert Academy League, and UYSA competitive platforms.

Players develop at different rates, and their pathways will not always look the same. Our responsibility is to provide an environment appropriate to where each player is today while preparing them for where their game can take them tomorrow.

Training and Competition

Academy programming is based on the age and developmental needs of each group. Training schedules, competition, tournaments, supplemental opportunities and seasonal programming may vary by age group and team.

That flexibility is intentional. A five-year-old discovering the game should not have the same soccer calendar or developmental expectations as a twelve-year-old preparing for Pre-MLS NEXT.

Families should expect quality coaching, purposeful training, meaningful competition and an environment designed to challenge players appropriately without losing sight of why they started playing the game in the first place.

The Sparta Standard

We want players who are confident with the ball, understand the game, compete when things become difficult, make their teammates better and increasingly take ownership of their development.

Just as importantly, we want players who love playing soccer. Development is a long process, and the best environment is one that challenges players while preserving the creativity, confidence and enjoyment that brought them to the game.

The game has changed considerably throughout Sparta's history and will continue to change. Our responsibility is to evolve with it without losing the emphasis on quality that has defined this club for more than four decades.

We are proud of where Sparta has been, and our Academy is committed to preparing the next generation of Sparta players.

Academy Coaches / Staff

What are the Qualifications of Sparta Academy Coaches?

Each Sparta Academy Staff Coach holds at least a USSF "D" license or higher and some coaches also hold the USSF "National Youth License". The "National Youth License" is designed for coaches that work specifically with children, ages 5-11.

Our team coaches have the UYSA grassroots license in an applicable format: 4:4, 7:7, 9:9 and/or 11:11.

Andy Phillips serves as Sparta United's Boys Academy Director, overseeing player and coach development across the U6-U12 boys program. He also coaches Sparta's U11 Pre-MLS NEXT team, creating a direct connection between the Academy and the beginning of the club's Pre-MLS NEXT pathway.

Andy grew up playing for Sparta United and continues to play soccer competitively today. A U.S. Soccer C-Licensed coach, his philosophy centers on long-term player development and creating age-appropriate environments that combine quality coaching and structure with the freedom for players to explore, make decisions, solve problems and develop a lasting love for the game.

As Academy Director, Andy's focus is creating continuity throughout Sparta's U6-U12 pathway while maintaining the quality and developmental standards that have defined the club for generations.

Are All Sparta Academy Coaches Qualified to Coach at this Level?

At Sparta United Soccer Club, our belief is that our academy is our future. You will find that throughout our Academy Program your child will not be coached or trained by a volunteer parent. Your child will receive the most extensive training there is in the State of Utah.

Each one of our "academy" teams is trained by one of our "staff coaches" and coached by someone who has had extensive training in youth soccer and holds a USSF License. Each coach is carefully interviewed and observed in a coaching environment before they are hired as a coach in our academy.
